If a friend came to you looking for advice on starting a blog, what three pieces of advice would you give them?
- No white/red/green font on dark background. In fact, you want to stay away from red. The color causes eye strain. White and green tend to glow a little and also can strain the eyes. Personally, I can't read blogs with these color schemes and if I do then it messes my eyes up. If you really want a dark background, use a light grey font. It doesn't glow.
- Keep the blog clean. There's nothing worse than a blog cluttered with images, buttons, and banners. Make it easy for me to get to your blog posts. Keep buttons and images to the side. If you have something really important to put at the top, don't make it huge.
- Can the Pop ups. This one may be more personal, but I HATE having a window pop up telling me to subscribe to a news letter. Don't tell me what to do! If a visitor really likes your content and your subscribe buttons are easy to find (mine are to the right and near the top so you see it almost right away) they will hit subscribe. Pop ups make me NOT want to come back.
- Make it easy to share content. You would not believe how many blogs I went to during the A to Z Challenge who did not have ways for me to share their content. There is simple HTML you can add to each posts to add all the buttons at the bottom. Here, I'll include it so you can use it.
