Glogg

Picture
  • A hot spiced wine and liquor punch served in Scandinavian countries as a Christmas drink
[Swedish glögg, from glödga to burn, mull, from glöd glowing coal, from Old Norse glōth; akin to Old English glēd glowing coal; First Known Use: 1927]
The crowd hollered and cheered, their mugs of grogg held high. They banged their fists on the table, sloshing more of the liquor. Even more was spilled when tussles broke out. Laughter ended the playful fights.

On into the night the celebration lasted. Silence fell as the sun rose, the Viking men passed out in the dining hall. A few women picked their way among the sprawled out limbs. They were mindful not to wake the sleeping. It was a well-earned rest after a well-earned celebration. The end of a long campaign against invaders from the South.

Hmm... wonder if that's where the term "groggy" comes from. Because those Vikings will sure probably be feeling that in the morning.

Hello! Lovely snippet, but have to tell you I hate Glögg. And punch, unlike all my friends. I'm not that keen on spices, I'm allergic to some, and sugar in wine? Nooooooooo...!

Hmm, I'll pass on that. Wine should be chilled ;-)

The party gets a little out of hand with too much Glogg flowing freely!

Now, are those ladies looking for their husbands, or just tidying up a little? :)

I've always wanted to try grogg. I'm sure one cup would put me out though.

Those vikings knew how to party, I always imagine them spilling their drinks everywhere. I wonder if this is where we get "glug", because that was how they drank!

You learn something new every day ... I didn't realise that glogg was a type of mulled wine. I'd always though it was a beer!

Sadly, even though I'm Viking through-and-through, I've never tried the glogg. Must rectify that!

Glogg or grogg? Are they interchangeable?
I enjoyed your celebration scene. It was very evocative.

I wonder if saying, "glug, glug," relates to glogg in any way?

It reminded me of the cartoon strip - Hagar The Horrible!
He was always celebrating a victory, drinks overflowing... so now I know that drink was called glogg.
Thanks for the lesson.
