My theme is Learn A Word in 100 Words. Each day I will showcase a new word and include it in a short flash fiction. I hope you enjoy.

Benthos
1:  The flora and fauna found on the bottom, or in the bottom sediments, of a sea or lake

Thick benthos layered the sea floor. Rays of sunlight filtered through the water. It caught the reflection of something silvery. I plucked the item from the corral. It was long and slender with a scooped end.

I turned it over in my hands. What did land dwellers use this for?

Stowing it in the bag I had salvaged from a sunken vessel, I swam home. There, I displayed my new treasure. My mate thought my hobby was a waste of time, but the dry world fascinated me. One day, I would go there. I just had to figure out how.

Oh I love the little mermaid feel to this and I'm guessing the item was a spoon?

Until she realizes the truth - there is no spoon...
(Name that movie!)

This reminds me a bit of something that I used to do on Twitter. It was called the 15 minute tweet tale. A fellow Twitterer would give us a word, something new to us, and we'd create a "story" for it in a tweet.

What a great story, and I love the word - never heard it before. I love that your sea dweller isn't running for the land for love, but from curiosity. :)

It's a great word, and its derivatives apply to all aspects of the deepsea world. So benthic regions would be the very deep parts of the oceans. Okay, so much for my oceanography course!!
(on the other hand, I know very little about the great works of literature!)

I like the idea of her not knowing what a spoon was. Makes perfect sense once you think about it.
