Zemmiphobe
––a person with the fear of the great mole rat
[Russian dialect- shchenyuk ‘puppy' +zemny 'of earth’]
Z was another letter without a lot of phobias. Etymology was tricky again. There isn't a species of mole called the great mole rat either.
Dear Diary, They say dinosaurs once ruled the earth. When they died, mammals took their place, but these weren't normal mammals. They were massive giants. And yes, I know those two words are basically the same, but that's just how big those so-called ancient animals were. I say so-called because I know they all didn't die out. There are giant, ugly moles burrowing under us, making tunnels and weakening the ground we walk on. Look at the increase in earthquakes. It's happening now! We are all going to die. All right, I have to admit, this one made me laugh. It also made me think of the naked mole rat, which is a real species. I learned about them on the Disney cartoon, Kim Possible. And then I thought about how a person with this fear might not be able to watch that kick-ass cartoon.

This was one funny phobia! Thank heaven I'm not Russian and thank heaven I don't even know what a great mole rat is. Thanks for the AtoZ of phobic words, Patricia. It's been fun to visit and find out if I'm afflicted by any of these.

LOL this was a funny one. I hope great mole rats don't actually exist...

This person should watch the movie City of Ember. Or maybe not.

Yeah those ugly moles are up to no good. Might make for a really good short story.

Ha ha! This one was funny...made me think of the R.O.U.S. rodents in The Princess Bride, which is one of my favorite movies. Congrats on completing A to Z!

I wondered what that scratching noise was under my floor boards just now. I hope I don't die before I've finished this rather agreeable bottle of red!

I guess I match that definition. It depends on my proximity to the great mole rat. Ten miles away? I wouldn't even think about it. Secretly deployed into my blanket? I'd probably freak out.

I think a fear of rats should be called common sense, not zemmiphobia! Yuck.

Oh, man, you were doing phobias all month. I'll have to go back and read them. Congrats on completing the A to Z Challenge!

I'm still chuckling over this. In fact, I had to look up "zemmiphobia" because I thought surely you had made this up. The diary entry is great.

@Keith, yes, the great mole rat should at least be considerate enough to wait until the booze is gone before murdering you. ;)

What a very specific phobia! It's weird because to have this phobia, you must have had to research the time period and the life forms that existed and then put two and two together and get about 75!

Yes my first thought was also Princess Bride. I wonder how large the actual live creature is? Maybe I don't want to know . . .
