Muahahahaha! I never pass up the chance to torment some fictional characters. It's just so fun. Today I have Charity Bradford and her new book, Fade Into Me. She handed Ryanne and Caedan over to me quite quickly and mercilessly. It must be a writer thing. We love to torture our beloved characters.
1)Let’s start with the basics. Tell us a bit about yourself and what makes you tick.
Caedan: My name is Caedan Frey. I’m 124 years old, but my birthday is in two months. It’s kind of a big deal since this is the year of Reparation and I’m heir to the throne. Don’t worry, I’ll do everything I need to in order to fulfill the High Council’s requirements.
What does all this mean? Nothing if you’re human. You’ll remain safe and clueless to the existence of my people. If you’re Abhithian the Reparation is a time of great hope. If I can find and marry a human capable of seeing and controlling magic, we will finally be free to return to our homeworld again. I just wish I could marry for love.
About FADE INTO ME
Ryanne: My name is Ryanne Killian, but most people call me Ry. I’m 18 and graduated from high school this week. My sister and I have been on our own for a few years now. We work hard to stay together and it’s nice to finally be out of school. It’ll be easier to work more hours now.
What makes me tick? I dunno. For the last few years I’ve just gone to school and work. That’s pretty much it. There’s not time for much else. Or money for that matter. It’s all good though.
2)Do you have any hobbies, favorite TV shows, books? Anything you fangirl/boy over?
Caedan: I don’t have time for any of that stuff. My whole life has been spent preparing to rule the Abhithians and protect the human race. Lessons on using magic and keeping the balance, keeping up with human politics and history, diplomatic strategies, you name it. There hasn’t been much time for anything else. Not even time to look for my bride. Out of all the things I’ve learned over the years, I enjoy dancing at mother’s parties.
Ryanne: Not anymore. I used to love to read and daydream. There have been a few shows I’ve liked, but I work most nights. There was one with this really good-looking guy that turned into some kind of monster. He liked this girl detective. Can’t remember what it was called though. Life kept pulling them apart. That seems pretty real life to me.
3)If you had one event from you past you could do over, what would it be?
Caedan: Nothing really. I’ve never failed at anything, and I always get what I want.
Ryanne: That’s hard. There are two. I wish I could have been a better kid. Maybe then my parents wouldn’t have left, but whatever. Heather, my sister, and I are fine without them, so if I could only change one thing it wouldn’t be that. I wish I had told Kevin no.
4)What is one thing from your past you’re most proud of?
Caedan: I’ve always done my duty. There have been many times I’ve wanted something different for my life, but I’ve always put my people first.
Ryanne: I dunno. I didn’t run Heather off? There haven’t been a lot of good things in my life the last few years. Mostly I’m proud that I did my part to help Heather pay the bills so we could keep the house. It’s not much, but it’s a roof over our heads.
Let’s do some fun questions.
5)Say you’re on an abandoned desert island and have three items, what would they be?
Caedan: Can I have a portal? As long as I have one of those I’ll be fine. I can use the earth’s magic for food and shelter. Then when I get bored I can link into the portal and go anywhere I want on earth—human or Abhithian dimensions.
Ryanne: A big knife. That would probably come in handy. Um, let’s see. Something to hold water in? And matches.
6)If you were caught dancing and singing in the shower, what song would be playing?
Caedan: The last time I was on the human side I heard a country song. I think the singer was Blake Shelton. The song is stuck in my head and I can’t help but think of the girl I have to marry. Whoever she is. It’s called “Over” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tpctFgADu4)
Ryanne: I don’t dance. EVER. Singing? I do like to listen to music. Especially the ones that uncover my soul. There’s one song that sums me up pretty good. I sing it to myself sometimes and hope that one day someone will see me. Really see me. It’s by Cassadee Pope, “You Hear a Song” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UdmVqWMSa0)
7)Name one guilty pleasure.
Caedan: I might have used magic to tweak other’s emotions once or twice. Never anything big, but it comes in handy when I want to be alone. And I really like my quiet time. There’s just never enough of it.
Ryanne: I walk in the botanical gardens at UNCC. It’s the only place I feel at peace with myself. The quiet, the colors of the flowers, everything soothes me. My favorite place is down by this little waterfall. It drowns out all the noise of the world.
8)Let’s play favorites:
Pepsi or Coke?
Ryanne: Neither, they make me jittery.
Pie or Cake?
Caedan: Definitely cake
Ryanne: Cake, the more the better!
White or dark chocolate?
Ryanne: Dark chocolate with almonds and sea salt.
Playstation 4 or Xbox 1or WiiU?
Caedan: Remember that no time thing? Sadly, gaming isn’t an option with the obligations I have.
Ryanne: I’ve never had any of these. They cost too much and I wouldn’t have time to play anyway. One time I played the Xbox at Kevin’s house, but I didn’t like it. It was a war game and we just killed each other over and over.
Paperback book or ebook?
Summer or winter?
Caedan: Spring. I love watching the swirls of life when the earth is waking from it’s sleep. The colors are magnificent.
Ryanne: I don't like being cold.
Puppies or kittens?
Caedan: *Shrugs* I've never given it much thought.
Vampires or werewolves?
Caedan: Neither, and if you know what’s good for you, you’ll avoid them both at all costs.
Ryanne: Neither. I don't believe in any kind of fairy tales so why would I pick one of these?
Aliens live among us. Their purpose: to protect and nurture their greatest mistake—mankind.
Caedan Frey’s family has fulfilled this duty for thousands of years, but it doesn’t free him from his obligation as prince of the Reparation. Although he doesn't believe humans will evolve to see the magic, much less control it, he has two months to marry one or face the wrath of the High Council. Bitter about a responsibility he thinks prevents him from marrying for love, he figures any human girl will do. He's ready to propose to one when his soul mate stumbles into—and right out—of his arms.
Human, Ryanne Killian might be his one shot at happiness while still fulfilling his duty. Unfortunately, she guards a dark secret within her co-dependent personality, and she thinks the only way to protect Caedan is to push him away.
Caedan must convince her she’s worthy of his love before the men from her nightmares return for a second round. If she can see her own worth, she just might save herself and his people.
