Flashback to Insta-Love
I commented that when I was teen, I remembered my first boyfriend. I had been certain he was the one. We were going to get married. He dumped me. Second boyfriend dumped me too. Both times, I would have swore up and down that we would be together forever. So love at first sight does happen, but it's more of an illusion. When you're a teen, you want it to be true love, but whether or not it really is remains to be seen.
It made me think about Snapshots (I'm trying to talk about it a lot in the upcoming weeks.) In it, Cyclop meets Amber and he falls head over heels for her. He's confused at first though. He thought he was gay because before meeting Amber his eyes (well, one eye. Has to keep one covered to stop the visions) were only for Darryl. But never mind his confusion.
My point is Amber wasn't Cyclop's first love. Nor was he hers. Before she met him, she dated a few guys. One she thought was the one. She'd describe it as love at first sight if you asked her. Boy, did that guy break her heart. I thought it important that both these characters had pervious experiences because that's how real life is. Sure, Cyclop can see your future when he looks in your eyes, but I still wanted him to feel realistic. Not all teens find their one true love in high school. Some don't find it in college. Why should my characters be any different?
