The paper floated gently in the chemicals. I carefully prodded it with some tongs, as if that would make the process go faster. Slowly, the image formed. My heart crawled up my throat as I watched the white turn into swirling colors and a figure took shape. Hands shaking, I lifted the photograph out of the chemicals. I could barely believe my eyes.
For months, I caught glimpses of an incipient figure in the cover of my eye. No one believed me. They laughed and said it was my imagination. Here was my proof. My worst nightmares, a reality.

Ooo, this is great, Patricia! I wonder what this incipient figure looked like and why knowing it is there is a nightmare.

Oooo, rockin' it old-school with the film and darkroom! Is that the only way to catch a nightmare? Great little ultra-short that could easily get bigger....

It brings back memories of art class in high school. Although, my skin didn't like the chemicals.

This piece engenders really mixed emotions - on the one hand, proof at last, but on the other, is the proof of a nightmare worse than the ridicule?

I'm going to bet that the ridicule would be easier to deal with than the nightmare. Just a hunch. ;)
