Mentally fatigued from my thoughts, I stashed my notebook and settled under the blankets. I stared at the green stars. The Big Dipper was right in the middle. A smile filled my face. My young mind had imagined I was sleeping under real stars. Life at nine years old had been so simple.
Unconsciousness was creeping up on me when something jolted me. The mattress springs creaked as a weight settled on the bed. A cool breath blew across my face. My eyes snapped open, fear sending my heart into overdrive.
The vampire of my dream sat on the edge of my bed, hovering over me. My heart beat faster, trying to escape from the confines of my ribs. He lifted a hand and pressed it against my chest. The beating intensified. I was going to have a heart attack.

“I sorry. I did not mean to make… afraid.” The vampire’s voice held an accent I couldn’t place and his words stumbled as if he didn’t know how to speak. He hung his head. “I did not mean to offend.”
My fingers were still against my mouth, touching the lingering cold. “You didn’t offend me. I was just thrown off guard.”
The vampire glanced at me, confused. “Off… guard?”
“Caught me by surprise. I wasn’t expecting that,” I explained.
“What did expect?”
My hand went to my neck.
