1: (In eastern Caribbean folklore) a malignant witch believed to shed her skin by night and suck the blood of her victims
Torchlight illuminated the figure lying in the dirt. The shadows on her face jerked as if trying to flee but were unable. Her mouth was stretched into a scream. Puncture wounds peppered her pale skin.
Sherriff Madison squatted down. “She got another.”
“Looks like it,” his deputy replied. He cast the torchlight around. “Location fits the other victims.”
“Yup.” Sherriff Madison rubbed his face. He was at his wits end. How did a mortal stop a soucouyant? He rose.
“What do we do?”
Sherriff Madison stared at the victim another second. He sighed heavily. “Only thing we can. Catch her.”
