Ten Years Later... Blogfest invites you to go into the future with one of your characters. You can write your post in any format you like - a journal entry, a newspaper article, a piece of flash fiction, an interview, or even an obituary.
I'm going with Snapshots because there is still hope that I can get Being Vampire figured out. I would really like to share Drew with the world. Thanks to Angeline and Laura for hosting this fest (even though I almost forgot about it. Sorry!) This is in Cyc's POV. Enjoy.
I glanced up from the TV. Amber peered at me from the kitchen doorway. Something about the way she stood, half hidden and clutching the frame made my stomach flop uneasily.
"Yeah?" A lump made it hard to speak, but I managed.
Amber marched to me, perching on the edge of the couch. Her unease looked worse at eye level. "We need to talk."
She's going to dump me. The thought popped into my head at lightening speed.
I couldn't blame her for wanting to break up with me. After all, I wasn't human, so our relationship was carefully monitored. I was often questioned about our sexual activity to learn more about my race. The questions weren't too invasive, but that didn't make it less awkward. Especially, when it was her dad asking me.
"Something has happened," Amber said slowly.
Did I prolong the heartbreak? Try to dissuade her? I didn't dare look in her eyes and risk seeing the inevitable before it happened. Timing was still hard to get too and I might end up seeing too far into her future and see her with another. My stomach clenched and I felt as if someone had punched me.
I nodded, unable to say anything.
"I... I think I'm pregnant."
It took me a second to process the words and what they meant. "Are you sure?"
Amber dug into her purse, producing a baggie with two pregnancy tests. She held them out to me.
I took the baggie, seeing the positive signs. My heart pounded against my ribs and my thoughts raced. "Have you told your dad?"
Amber shook her head. "I wanted to talk to you first." She took a deep breath. "I want you to look into my future. Tell me if they take the baby away from us."
I opened my mouth to state how ridiculous that sounded, but snapped my mouth shut. It wasn't ridiculous. I wasn't human and making babies with Amber was a huge no. We weren't even sure we'd be allowed to get married.
Worry shined in Amber's eyes as I stared into them. Her future reached out and I let it pull me in. Images sprung up around me, obscuring our apartment. I wandered through the snapshots, seeing one of me and Amber with her father, his mouth hanging open in shock. Guess that was us delivering the news. Others showed Amber, her belly getting bigger and bigger. I recognized the lab in many of the images. No surprise. A hybrid baby couldn't be born in a normal hospital. A few, I tried not to look too closely. I didn't want to spoil surprises like gender. Finally, I made it to the baby's birth. My knees shook as I stood before a snapshot. Amber held a small bundle and her face shined with love. I was with her, my arms around her and the baby.
"Well?" Amber asked, her face pinched with fear when I returned to the present.
Dull pain throbbed behind my eyes. It had been a while since I looked into another's future. A smile spread across my face. I took her hands and pulled her to her feet. "Let's go tell your dad he's going to be a grandpa. Although, we better make sure a chair is close by otherwise he'll be on the floor."
