This week's Write On Edge prompt was to write a 350 word fiction or non-fiction piece where something local plays a part. At first, I wasn't sure what to write. Nothing came to mind and I didn't have any works in progress I could steal from. I kept seeing an image of a diner in my head though. If I could just think up something... Then it hit me. In my Path of Angels series, my archangels are always visiting a small diner. They love the coffee and the workers are always friendly. So I decided to write about their first time at the diner. I wanted to focus on description, but the boys wouldn't shut up, Joe especially. I think I ended with some nice interaction though. Enjoy. Oh, don't forget to link up and check out other participants.
The diner was nestled on a busy street corner. A neon light flashed FOOD and underneath a sign declared, Best coffee in the world! Waitresses in light blue and white uniforms could be seen serving customers.
Hunger rumbled in Michael’s stomach. “Let’s go there.”
Joe groaned, the sound a mixture of real anguish and theatrics. “Mikey, I’m tired and I want to sleep. We have coffee in the hotel room.”
“Don’t be such a whiner,” Zade scolded.
“I’m game,” Gabe said between yawns.
A bell chimed over their heads as they trudged into the diner. Faces turned to scrutinize the newcomers but interest was quickly lost. A waitress smiled and called out, “Take a seat anywhere and I’ll be right with you.”
They had barely sat before the waitress appeared as promised. “Hi, my name is Anna. What can I get you?”
“Coffee. Cooooooffeeeeeee,” Joe moaned.
“Coffee,” Gabe and Zade replied in unison.
“Coffee and a menu, please,” Michael said.
Anna handed him a menu. “Since you’re new, I’m obliged to tell you that if you don’t agree our coffee is the best in the world your meal is free.”
“Free?” Joe’s head snapped up. He yanked the menu from Michael. “I’ll have a cheese burger with curly fries, cup of chili and,” he scanned the menu again, “A whole cherry pie.”
Zade sighed. “Jophiel, you’re not going to eat all that.”
“Who cares, it’s gonna be free,” Joe replied.
“I hope this coffee turns out to be the best in the world just so I can see you eat your words,” Gabe said. “And all that food.”
Michael ordered a sandwich and Anna scurried off with a promise to return shortly. A sly smile filled her face when she came back, coffee pot in hand. “Ready for the best coffee in the world?”
Everyone in the diner seemed to turn. Anticipation filled the air. The four brothers lifted their cups and took a sip. Joe set his cup down first. His voice was quiet, “I’d like to change my order to just a burger please.”
