About the Author:
Patricia never set out to become a writer, and in fact, she never considered it an option during high school and college. She was more of an art and band geek. Some stories are meant to be told, and now she can't stop writing. She writes New Adult under the name Patricia Josephine and Young Adult under the name Patricia Lynne. Patricia lives with her husband in Michigan, hopes one day to have what will resemble a small petting zoo, and has a fondness for dying her hair the colors of the rainbow. |
Author Interview:
1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your background as a writer.
Well, writing wasn’t on my bucket list. It wasn’t even on the radar. I was all about art in high school, then later, cooking. Most of my day jobs consisted of cooking in restaurants. I always had story ideas. I’d use them to lull myself to sleep. Sometimes. There’d be nights, I’d lay awake most of the night, musing on various stories. It wasn’t until I was bored one day that I decided to write the stories down. When I started my first young adult novel, Being Human, it seemed like a story people would enjoy reading. I started looking into publishing. It exploded from there and now not writing is a very weird concept.
2) What inspired you to write your first book?
I remember this like it was yesterday… hehe It was while hubby and I were visiting his parents and we went to the book store. I bought about 80$ worth of books, one called Thirsty. This book didn’t have a happily ever after; it’s ending was dark and stuck with me. I kept wondering what would happen next. This idea started to form about a vampire, newly turned. Humanity knew about vampires and hated them and wanted this one dead. But he had eluded capture. He was determined to survive because of his brother. The idea really had a hold of me so I started writing it down and it became Being Human.
3) Do you listen to music when you write and if so, what genre?
No, I can’t listen to music. It distracts me. Sometimes a song will inspire a scene, but chances are, it’s not the story I’m working on and doesn’t do me much good. I can, however, watch TV, but only certain shows that don’t require much attention.
4) What's your favorite time of the day for writing?
I usually write in the afternoon or evening. I’m not a morning person, so that’s just out of the question. Unless we are talking one in the morning, but by then I’m usually too tired to string a sentence together.
5) Can you write on demand and under pressure, or do you need time and space before the creativity starts to flow?
I can’t write under pressure, my mind freezes and all I think about is how I need to get this written by this time and it’s not happening!!!! I guess since I’m such a mellow person, my writing flows better when I’m relaxed and calm.
6) What is your favorite part of the process? What is your least favorite part? (1st draft, revisions, querying, publication, audience reaction, something else??)
That’s a tough one because there are various aspects I enjoy throughout the whole writing process. Although, I can say I’m not fond of marketing. That involves talking to people and I’m quite the introvert and assume I’m bothering people and they just want me to shut up.
7) What is the best piece of advice you would give a new writer?
Find what works best for you. There is a lot of advice out there on how to write. The thing is, each writer is different. What works for someone, may not work for another. You have to try it all and see how it turns out. If it works, keep it. If it doesn’t, discard it and don’t feel guilty when someone says it’s what they do.
8) What are you working on right now?
I always have a few stories at various stages in development. What I should be working on is the sequel to Abducted Life, but the plot is being elusive. Same goes for a sequel to Mistakes of the Past. Bits and pieces are coming to me, so hopefully, I'll get the plot sorted and get writing on them. While I wait for that to happen, I'm rewriting a young adult story called Leaves of Fall. it's a post-apocalyptic story where humanity and nature are at war and have destroyed the world in the process. Armory, a girl born after and doesn't know life without war, is kidnapped by outlaws and ends up being saved by a tree. They travel across the wastelands of the USA to get her back home.
